Editing

Hopefully you have been editing all the way through, but today we are going to make sure that your writing is as good as it can get ready for publishing your work.

To start with I would like you to read the whole diary through beginning with the first entry at Basecamp. Read it out loud as this is the best way to spot mistakes. (When you read in your head your clever brain often adds in words you are missing without you realising!)

As you read, make any changes that you notice in a different colour than you wrote in. You can write above the words or in the margin. Please don’t rub out and change your writing. I love to see that you have made changes – it shows excellent learning.

Next I would like you to check through your whole piece of work for these things:

  • Capital letters and full stops, including capital letters for the names of people and places.
  • Paragraphs.
  • Time connectives (next, after that, finally, in the morning etc)
  • Lots of amazing adjectives. Chilli challenge - Try and add at least two more to each diary entry.
  • Adverbs to describe how you move or how something sounds. Chilli challenge – add at least one more to each diary entry.
  • Check it is written in the correct tense (this might be past or present depending on the part of the diary – telling the story of the day or what you are doing now)
  • It is all written in the first person – using I, my, our, we etc

When you have checked all this you are finished. Well done! Next week you will publish your work. I can’t wait to see the finished diaries!
