The children in Year 1 had a fantastic time celebrating our special Medieval Day and thoroughly enjoyed stepping back in time! It was wonderful to see everyone arriving in their fantastic costumes and sharing them with their classmates. The effort that went into the outfits helped to bring the day to life and created a real medieval atmosphere.
Throughout the day, the children took part in a carousel of exciting activities. They designed and created beautiful stained-glass windows, drew and labelled pictures to make their own personalised placemats, produced colourful bunting, and used 2D shapes to cut, stick and recreate impressive castles.
In the afternoon, the children learned about medieval dancing. After watching examples of traditional dances, they worked in groups to practise the different steps and movements. They quickly picked up the routines and thoroughly enjoyed performing them together.
To round off the day, the children watched Zog, helped prepare for a medieval banquet, and then enjoyed a special feast together at a long banquet table. Their handmade placemats were proudly displayed, the bunting decorated the hall, and the stained-glass artwork added the perfect finishing touch, creating a wonderful medieval setting.
The children embraced every part of the day with enthusiasm, creativity and excellent behaviour, making it a truly memorable experience for everyone involved. Well done, everyone! π°πβ¨
Wow! Once again, our school hall was packed as families joined us for our Harvest Assemblies this week. It was wonderful to see so many parents, carers and family members coming together to celebrate the children's learning and give thanks for the harvest season.
The children shared a fantastic range of work and taught us so much about the importance of harvest. Our youngest children in Reception confidently recited poems and shared their learning about pumpkins, whilst Year 1 proudly presented their colourful rainbow made from fruits and vegetables, helping us to think about the wide variety of foods that harvest provides.
Across the school, pupils reflected on themes of gratitude, community and caring for the environment. We were delighted by the children's confidence, enthusiasm and thoughtful contributions throughout the assemblies.
A particular highlight was Year 6's moving performance of "Thanks for the Harvest", which rounded off the KS2 celebration beautifully.
We are sure you will agree that all the children did an amazing job in both assemblies and should be incredibly proud of themselves.
A heartfelt thank you goes to all our parents and carers for your generous harvest donations. We were thrilled to learn from Aylesbury Vineyard that Whitchurch Combined School provided the second-highest total donation of all participating schools in Aylebsury and the surrounding villages, contributing over 200kg of food and essentials. Your kindness and generosity will make a real difference to local families and individuals who need support.
Thank you for helping us make our Harvest festival celebrations such a memorable and successful celebration. Together, we have truly demonstrated the spirit of our school community.
Yesterday afternoon, Key Stage 1 & Reception class were taken on a wonderful adventure through time with the acclaimed author Sita Brahmachari.
Through storytelling, Sita helped the children explore how personal stories and adventures can connect people. As she shared her book, the children discovered how a golden thread running through every page wove together individual experiences to create a beautiful "story quilt", showing how our unique stories can come together to form something special.
Sita spoke about what inspires her writing and explained how her story explores themes of new beginnings, belonging and connection. The children were captivated as she brought the story to life with her engaging storytelling and expressive actions.
Afterwards, each child was given their own patchwork piece and invited to illustrate a part of their personal story. These individual squares will come together, just like in Sita's story, to create a shared piece of artwork celebrating the experiences of our KS1 and Reception children.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
Taimoor said, "I enjoyed listening to her because she did some great actions at the beginning of each page."
George added, "I enjoyed the great story and colourful pictures!"
It was a truly inspiring experience that encouraged creativity, imagination and a love of storytelling. We are very grateful to Sita for sharing her time and inspiring our young readers and writers.
Key Stage 2 pupils enjoyed a fantastic visit from the acclaimed author M. G. Leonard, who came to Whitchurch to talk about her brand-new book, Attack of the Sea Dogs.
During her engaging presentation, M. G. Leonard shared how she finds inspiration for her stories and gave pupils an insight into her journey as a writer. She explained that her Time Keys series was inspired by her love of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and the exciting idea of travelling through doors into different worlds and time periods.
Pupils were fascinated to hear about Attack of the Sea Dogs, which features a young Francis Drake embarking on thrilling pirate adventures, stealing Spanish gold and being chased around the world.
Ruby from Year 6 said:
"She was so fascinating! I loved hearing how she got the inspiration for all of her books and how The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe inspired her Time Keys series."
The visit also gave pupils the chance to discover where M. G. Leonard's first book idea came from. She spoke about her fascination with rhinoceros beetles and how this unusual interest inspired her bestselling debut novel, Beetle Boy.
Jamie said:
"I loved hearing about how much she liked rhinoceros beetles and how they inspired her first ever book, Beetle Boy."
The session was both entertaining and inspiring, encouraging pupils to use their own interests and imaginations as a starting point for creative writing.
A huge thank you to M. G. Leonard for sharing her stories with us and inspiring the next generation of readers and writers.
