Dear Parent/Carer,
Welcome to our February half-term newsletter. Although this is often one of the quieter terms in school, it has still been a very busy one, filled with exciting events, enriching learning opportunities and wonderful achievements across the school. We are proud to share some of the highlights from the past few weeks and celebrate the hard work, enthusiasm and positive attitudes shown by our pupils.

Junior Road Safety Officers at Work
We are very proud of our Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs), who have been working hard with Mrs Lawson to create some fantastic posters promoting important road safety messages for everyone outside our school.
Alongside our Parking Buddies, the JRSOs have shared clear reminders with the local community, including:
-
Cole – Please don’t use your phone while driving.
-
Alice and Amber – Please don’t park across people’s driveways or on the zig-zag lines.
-
Will – Please don’t park on grass verges.
The children also came up with a brilliant slogan for their campaign:
“Be kind, be cool – keep us safe outside our school!”
We are incredibly proud of the effort, teamwork and confidence shown by our JRSOs, and we would like to thank everyone who is helping us keep our school community safe.'
Sadly, there have been some examples of poor parking outside school over the last few weeks.
We kindly ask all parents and carers to ensure that during busy drop-off and collection times, you park safely, responsibly and considerately. Please do not park on zig zag lines, block driveways or junctions, or pull up on grass verges, as this can be unsafe and cause damage to the local environment.
It is important that we work together to keep all of our children and families safe, while also maintaining positive relationships with our neighbours by respecting the local community and the area around our school.
This initiative is supported in partnership with White Swan, Whitchurch, Oving Logs, Whitchurch PTA, Montage Marketing Agency, Cousins Garage and Hampden Equine Vets.

Young Voices 2026
On Thursday 22nd January, the Whitchurch Choir travelled to the O2 Arena in London to take part in the Young Voices concert. Since September, the children have been working incredibly hard to learn all the songs and dance moves, and they were beyond excited to finally perform on such a huge stage.
At the arena, we were seated right at the very top, almost next to the ceiling! It certainly took a little while to get used to the height, but it didn’t dampen the excitement. Throughout the entire day, the children worked tirelessly, behaved beautifully and were an absolute credit to Whitchurch.
The concert itself was truly amazing. The choir joined in with huge enthusiasm, with many of the children singing, dancing and jumping around for hours without a break. The journey home was a long one, but also a quiet one, filled with exhausted children fast asleep after an unforgettable experience.
A massive well done to all the children for being so amazing, and a huge thank you to the adults — Mrs Carson, Mrs Atkinson, Mrs Sewter, Mrs Spring and Mrs Band — who gave up their time and stayed until late at night to make this wonderful opportunity possible.

PTA Movie Nights and "Dare to be Different" Day!
Our KS1 and KS2 children recently enjoyed PTA Movie Nights, watching Smurfs and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw. The events were a huge success and gave the children the chance to relax, enjoy a film with friends and have lots of fun.
Once again today, the children enjoyed a PTA-organised “Dare to Be Different” Day. Pupils were encouraged to show their creativity by making changes to their uniform, with a contribution of 50p per change or £2 for five or more changes.
The day was filled with colour, fun, and individuality, and it was wonderful to see the children embracing the spirit of the event. Here are some of the children enjoying this fantastic day!
A big thank you to the PTA for organising these events and for all the hard work that went into making them so enjoyable for the children. We are very grateful for their continued support of our school community.

Sports News – Spring Term
Despite the dreary and wet weather we have experienced for much of this half-term, we have still managed to pack in a fantastic range of sporting opportunities for the children. Please head over to the Sports News – Spring Term section of our website for more details.
Highlights this term have included Year 5 and 6 Rock Climbing at Sir Henry Floyd Grammar School, as well as football matches for the Whitchurch Kites, Whitchurch Warriors, and Whitchurch Wanderers. Pupils have also enjoyed taking part in a handball festival and netball matches
Our netballers are new this year, and we are delighted with the enthusiasm shown so far. Thanks to Mrs Parker, Mrs Gregory, Mrs Burgess, and Mrs Spring, we held our first training session at Bedgrove Junior School, followed by our first match against Edlesborough School. Well done to all pupils involved – a fantastic start!
A big thank you to our generous Partners in Sport at Whitchurch for their continued support: Hannon Builders, Vass Tech, John Dennis 4x4, Oh! Honey Beauty, and Fitworx. Your support helps make these opportunities possible.

Reading Buddies Afternoon
We enjoyed a truly wonderful afternoon with our Reading Buddies at Whitchurch Combined School earlier this term.
The children came to school dressed in their pyjamas and comfy slippers, bringing along their favourite books for a cosy and relaxed reading experience. Throughout the afternoon, our older pupils did a fantastic job of collecting their younger buddies, finding quiet, comfortable spaces around the school, and sharing stories together.
This special event is always a firm favourite. The younger children love spending time with their older buddies, listening to stories and enjoying the calm, caring atmosphere that reading together creates.
Winnie in Year 1 told us:
“I love it because we get to bring in our favourite book, wear my pyjamas and read with Erin and Annabelle who are in Year 6.”
Moments like these truly highlight the caring and supportive spirit of our school community, and we are so proud of all the children who took part.

Author Visit – KS2 - Nat Harrison
KS2 were delighted to welcome author Nat Harrison, who visited to talk about her book The Girl Who Raced the World last week.
Nat shared her idea of a “writing suitcase” in her head, filled with story ideas such as what the story is about and a “what if…?” question that writers can build their stories around. She then challenged the children to write down as many “what if…?” ideas as they could.
Ruby (Year 5) came up with the imaginative idea of “What if you were going on holiday on the wrong plane?” Ruby also really enjoyed listening to Nat read a short extract from the book — just enough to intrigue us without giving too much away! She added that all the children had a great time, and that many pupils bought the book, which they are now enjoying reading. Ruby is already on Chapter 10!
A big thank you to Ben and Alison at Our Bookshop, Tring, for organising this fantastic event for the children.

The Great Fire of London Day
Year 2 stepped back in time to 1666 for an exciting History Off The Page workshop all about the Great Fire of London. For the day, the children became apprentices, discovering what life was like in 17th century London.
The classroom was transformed into a bustling street of shops, and the children took on important roles as metal workers, weavers, scriveners, candle makers, chemists, bakers and tanners. They learnt about the different crafts and had great fun creating their own items, just as people would have done over 350 years ago. There was plenty of enthusiasm as the apprentices worked hard to master their new skills.
Later, the children travelled forward in time to the aftermath of the Great Fire. They carefully sifted through wreckage discovered at different locations and used clues and their knowledge of the various trades to solve a challenge. Working as young historians, they decided which artefacts belonged to each shop and whether the buildings had been burnt down, blown up or pulled down to stop the fire from spreading.
It was an amazing day of hands-on learning, filled with teamwork, problem-solving and excitement. Year 2 truly brought history to life!

Safer Internet Day 2026 – Smart Tech, Safe Choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI.
This year’s Safer Internet Day 2026 theme is “Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI.”
A huge thank you to Mrs Fowler, our Computing and IT Lead, who launched Safer Internet Day in school yesterday. She hosted a fantastic whole-school assembly where children learnt about how AI is used in everyday life and, importantly, how to use it safely and responsibly.
Mrs Fowler amazed everyone by showing a photo of our school field with dinosaurs on it, created using AI! The children absolutely loved seeing how technology can transform an image so realistically.
The children also took part in a fun and interactive quiz, created by Mrs Fowler, where they had to decide whether images of teachers had been altered using AI or not. It was a great way to explore how images online are not always what they seem.
Mollie from Year 6 shared a very important message about AI:
“I use AI to research different facts but sometimes I know they are wrong so I check with an adult at home, or if it’s maths, I actually work the question out but use AI to check.”
I’m sure you’ll agree that this is a really important reminder — AI can be a helpful tool, but we must always think carefully, check information and use it responsibly.
Well done to everyone for taking part in such an important day of learning.
PS – Are Mr Soar and Cookie Monster really at supporting Derby County at Pride Park? (See below!)
We are proud to be working in partnership with Single Mode Fibre Networks, who continue to provide high-quality fibre broadband to the school, ensuring fast and reliable connectivity for teaching and learning.
We also work closely with ittechsupport, who provide our ongoing IT support in school, helping to maintain our systems and keep everything running smoothly.

Last week children across the school had a fantastic time celebrating with a range of fun and engaging maths activities!
Year 5 especially enjoyed putting Mr Soar to the test with a little bit of mathematical magic. He was asked to pick a number between 0–50, multiply it by 2, add 6, divide by 2 and finally subtract 20. Amazingly, Year 5 confidently announced that the answer would be 3! Try it yourself and see what happens! The children were not giving away their secret…
As well as magical maths, the children took part in a variety of practical challenges. They managed to create a standing square and triangle using just one piece of paper, showing great problem-solving and teamwork skills. There was also some fantastic work solving algebraic equations using lolly sticks, helping to bring maths to life in a hands-on way.
It was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm and enjoyment for maths across the school. The children absolutely loved the activities while raising awareness for such an important cause. Well done, everyone!
