Our school’s annual Handwriting Competition awards were presented by Mrs Hutton and our local MP, Laura Kyrke-Smith. It was wonderful to celebrate the effort, progress, and pride our pupils take in their handwriting.

Christmas Concert – Autumn Term 2

Christmas Concert

The school hall was filled to the rafters as families and friends gathered for our annual Christmas Concert!

We were wowed by recorder performances from Year 3 and Year 5, who played Jingle Bells and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. We also enjoyed festive guitar performances from Harris, Tristan and Benny.

There were many wonderful piano pieces performed by pupils from across the school, including Sunny, Ava, Cassidy, Guy, Polina, Ruby, Anvitaa, Jamie, Erin, Amelia, Ottilie and Oscar. A special well done to Henryk for his fantastic trumpet playing – a Christmas Concert first!

The audience was also treated to some fabulous drumming from Isaac, Hugo, Alex and William. In addition, our Choir gave a lovely performance of a Pop Medley, which they will be performing at the O2 in the Spring Term, as well as some festive favourites from the whole school, including Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and O Little Town of Bethlehem.

Well done to Mr Carson for putting together such a fantastic concert, and congratulations to all the pupils for performing so confidently and beautifully.

  

Reception Class – 'I spy Christmas' show – Autumn Term 2

I Spy Christmas!

This week, the Reception children took to the stage to perform I Spy Christmas! The children were absolute stars — all their hard work practising their songs and actions was warmly received by our wonderful family audience, who filled the hall with festive cheer!

The children should be incredibly proud of themselves, and we thank everyone who came to support their performance. A huge thank-you goes to Mrs Lawson, Mrs Fowler, Mrs Little, Mrs Band and Mrs Sewter for their hard work and dedication in putting together such a fantastic Whitchurch Christmas performance.

We are extremely proud of our youngest pupils and the fantastic team who supported them. We hope you all have an amazing Christmas!

   

Laura Kyrke-Smith visit – Autumn Term 2

Christmas Card Competition Success!

Laura Kyrke-Smith, Labour MP for Aylesbury & the villages, launched her annual Christmas Card Competition, inviting local schoolchildren to submit their festive artwork. The winning design is used on her official Christmas cards, which are sent out during the Christmas season.

We are delighted to share that Ayria (Year 3) was chosen as the winner with her fantastic design – we are all so proud of her! 🌟

Ayria received a special notepad and pen from Laura Kyrke-Smith, along with a framed certificate, and her Christmas card signed by Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House of Commons. Laura also shared the exciting news that Ayria’s card was given to the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer!

👏 Well done, Ayria – a wonderful achievement! 👏

   

KS2 House Singing Competition - Autumn Term 2

KS2 House Singing Competition

This year, the KS2 children split into their four houses and learnt a festive song to perform in our annual House Singing Competition.

  • Ascott, led by Henry and Eliza, performed Wham’s “Last Christmas”

  • Claydon, led by Benny and Erin, performed “Jingle Bell Rock”

  • Hartwell, led by Annabelle and Tommi, performed the class Christmas song “Everybody’s Having Fun” by Shakin’ Stevens

  • Mentmore, led by Ottilie and Tom, performed Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas”

The children all sang and danced amazingly, bringing energy and festive cheer to their performances. Ascott were judged the overall winners by Mrs Mobbs and Mrs Williams.

Mr Soar was especially pleased, having choreographed Ascott’s fantastic dance moves — no dad dancing here!

Well done to all of KS2 for such a brilliant and fun event.

KS1 Christmas Performance of Penguin Pete – Autumn Term 2

Penguin Pete – KS1 Christmas Show

Our Year 1 and Year 2 pupils shone brightly in their wonderful performance of Penguin Pete this week! Every child projected their voice beautifully, sang with enthusiasm and acted with real confidence. We were all delighted to see the penguins successfully complete their journey to the North Pole—just in time to receive their cosy slippers from Santa!

A huge thank you to Ms Brown and Mrs Compton for their fantastic direction, and to Mrs Perrett, Mrs Clark, Mrs Hunt, and Mrs Heron for their hard work in organising the costumes and ensuring the children were in the right place at the right time! We are also very grateful to Mrs Evans for creating the stunning scenery and providing her lighting expertise, which helped bring the show to life.

Well done to all involved for making this year’s KS1 Christmas performance such a memorable and magical event! 🎄🐧✨

 

Safety Week - Autumn Term 2

Whitchurch Combined School Safety Week

Our children embraced our motto Growing Today, Ready for Tomorrow by learning how to keep themselves and others safe in a variety of real-life situations.

Road Safety:

  • All children practised safe road crossing skills.
  • Year 2 mastered the Green Cross Code.

Safety in the Home:

  • Year 1 learnt important safety tips to keep themselves safe at home.
  • Year 5 explored essential lessons in kitchen safety—vital knowledge for their growing independence.

Online Safety:

  • All children took part in e-safety sessions, learning how to stay safe and responsible online.
  • Year 3 and Year 4 created excellent online safety posters to help spread the message around school.

Feeling Safe & Speaking Up:

  • Children watched an NSPCC video about feeling safe, recognising worries, and knowing how to seek help if something doesn’t feel right.
  • We also reinforced how children can reach out to Childline if they ever need support (0800 1111).

Mental Health & Wellbeing:

  • We were joined by the Bucks Mental Health Support Team (MHST) from the Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, who delivered workshops to help children understand and look after their mental health.

Anti-Bullying:

  • Year 6 created some fantastic anti-bullying posters, sharing powerful messages about kindness and respect.
  • The week also included thoughtful anti-bullying activities across the school, helping children learn how to be supportive classmates.

Bright Jumper & Odd Sock Day:

  • The week ended on a colourful note, celebrating both Road Safety Week and Anti-Bullying Week with bright jumpers and odd socks.

Remembrance Assembly  - Autumn Term 2

Remembrance Assembly

Year 6 led our annual Remembrance Assembly on 7 November. They recited poetry by Wilfred Owen, John McCrae and Laurence Binyon; read extracts from War Horse and diary entries from the front line; and performed a selection of wartime songs they had prepared.

A child from each class was invited to lay a wreath at our cenotaph, followed by a minute’s silence after The Last Post.

This was a truly moving and memorable assembly, and we are very proud of our Year 6 pupils for leading it with such maturity and respect.

    

Snow White Pantomime - Autumn Term 2

Snow White Pantomime

What a fantastic way to start our half term! Quantum Theatre put on an amazing performance of Snow White. A special well done to Bella and Benny for leading the dancing at the front – you were brilliant!

Even a fire drill midway through the performance didn’t stop the fun. A huge thank you to the PTA for kindly funding this wonderful event.

Year 3  - Iron Age day - Autumn Term 1

Year 3 Time Travels to the Iron Age!

On Friday 17th October, Year 3 took a fascinating step back in time to experience life in the Iron Age! The day was filled with hands-on activities that brought history to life. In the morning, the children carved soap to create their own “hand axes,” tried their hand at weaving, baked traditional Iron Age bread, and even decorated themselves with blue paint to look like Celtic warriors.

In the afternoon, everyone gathered outside to light a fire and bake their bread, which they then enjoyed with an (almost) authentic Iron Age stew. It was a wonderful way to bring the topic to a close, and the children thoroughly enjoyed immersing themselves in the past.

What a fantastic end to our Iron Age adventure!

          

Visiting KS2 Author - Susannah Lloyd - Autumn Term 1

Author Visit: Susannah Lloyd Brings Laughter and Badgers to School!

Earlier this term, we were delighted to welcome visiting author Susannah Lloyd, who came to share her brand-new book Badgers Are Go – Revenge of the Claw! with our pupils.

Susie captivated everyone with entertaining stories about her journey to becoming a writer — and even carried out a very important investigation to uncover whether Mr. Soar might secretly be a badger. After some rigorous testing… it was confirmed — he was indeed a badger!

Erin in Year 5 shared her thoughts on the visit:

“Susie was really funny and made everyone laugh and got lots of children to dress in strange clothes. We also learnt that Mr Soar was a badger but most of the children weren't!”

It was a fantastic visit full of laughter, imagination, and unexpected discoveries. Thank you, Susie, for inspiring our young readers and writers — and for revealing the truth about Mr. Soar! Thanks to Ben and Alison at Our BookShop, Tring for organising! 

               

Harvest Festivals - Autumn Term 1

Harvest Festivals 

Wow! We have genuinely never seen the school hall so full as it was on Monday 6th and Wednesday 7th October, when families packed in to watch our fantastic KS2 and KS1 and Reception Harvest Assemblies!

The children taught us so much about Harvest – from how it is celebrated around the world, to thoughtful prayers, impressive pumpkin displays, and even a brilliant performance of Big Red Combine Harvester by our new Reception children. We were also treated to a lively Harvest rap, which had everyone smiling!

We are sure you will all agree that the children did a wonderful job.

A heartfelt thank you to all our parents and carers for your incredibly generous donations. As you can see from the photo above, the Aylesbury Vineyard collection van was filled to the brim!

    

MacMillan Coffee Afternoon - Autumn Term 1

Macmillan Coffee Afternoon – A Huge Success!

A big thank you to everyone who joined us for the Macmillan Coffee Afternoon on Friday 3rd October. Thanks to your kindness and generosity, the school raised an amazing £165.02 in support of this fantastic cause.

We are incredibly grateful to:

  • Our wonderful staff for baking and bringing in so many delicious cakes

  • Our parents and families for their generosity and support

  • Mrs George and Mrs Berridge for organising the event so brilliantly

Your contributions have helped make a real difference. Together, we showed the true spirit of our school community!

 

Medieval Marvels in Year 1!  Autumn Term 1

Medieval Marvels in Year 1!

We had a truly fantastic Medieval Day filled with creativity, learning, and lots of fun!

The excitement was clear from the very start as the children proudly arrived in their wonderful medieval costumes. Knights, princesses, kings, and peasants filled the classrooms with colour and imagination!

Throughout the morning, the children rotated through a range of themed activities in small groups, each one helping them discover a different part of medieval life:

  • Bunting Making – Everyone designed their own colourful bunting to decorate the banquet hall.

  • Medieval Placemats – Inspired by grand feasts, the children carefully crafted placemats with detailed drawings and labels.

  • Stained Glass Windows – Using tissue paper and glue, they created stunning stained glass artwork after learning about the beautiful windows found in castles and churches.

  • 2D Shape Castles – A maths twist on the theme, where the children used shapes to construct their very own castle designs.

In the afternoon, the pace slowed as the children listened to a medieval story before learning some traditional dancing. The day ended with a special banquet — complete with decorations and table settings made by the children themselves!

It was a memorable day full of imagination, teamwork, and hands-on learning. A big well done to all our young lords and ladies!
