To celebrate World Book Day, the children in school enjoyed dressing up as their favourite book characters. 📚✨
There were some absolutely wonderful costumes – from classic storybook heroes to magical characters – and the effort was fantastic to see!
A huge thank you to all the parents and carers who took the time to help make the children look so fabulous. Your creativity really helped bring the stories to life and made the day extra special for everyone.
We especially loved the Hedwig, Phileas Fogg and Darth Vader combination in Year 5!
Here is a selection of some photos from the day! 📸
World Book Day at Whitchurch: A Mythical Adventure!
This year, the children at Whitchurch celebrated World Book Day with an exciting two-day round-robin series of activities that brought stories and creativity to life across the school.
Pupils were mixed into their school houses – Ascott, Claydon, Hartwell, and Mentmore – and worked together in their teams throughout the event. Each group travelled around the different classrooms, where they listened to a short story and then took part in a fun activity inspired by the book.
The theme this year was Mythical Creatures, which sparked the children’s imaginations and creativity. In the classrooms, pupils created a wonderful range of crafts linked to the stories they explored. Some children sculpted Thor’s hammer out of clay, while others made Kraken pencils using colourful pipe cleaners. Every room offered a new adventure and a new mythical creation.
The children thoroughly enjoyed spending a couple of days off timetable, immersing themselves in stories, crafts, and collaborative activities with pupils from across the school.
To finish the celebrations, today was our World Book Day dress-up day. The school was filled with a fantastic array of costumes, as children arrived dressed as their favourite book characters and mythical beings.
It has been a wonderful celebration of reading, creativity, and imagination for everyone at Whitchurch!
Year 2 stepped back in time to 1666 for an exciting “History Off The Page” workshop all about the Great Fire of London. For the day, the children became apprentices, discovering what life was like in 17th century London.
The classroom was transformed into a bustling street of shops, and the children took on important roles as metal workers, weavers, scriveners, candle makers, chemists, bakers and tanners. They learned about the different crafts and had great fun creating their own items, just as people would have done over 350 years ago. There was plenty of enthusiasm as the apprentices worked hard to master their new skills.
Later, the children travelled forward in time to the aftermath of the Great Fire. They carefully sifted through wreckage discovered at different locations and used clues and their knowledge of the various trades to solve a challenge. Working as young historians, they decided which artefacts belonged to each shop and whether the buildings had been burnt down, blown up or pulled down to stop the fire from spreading.
It was an amazing day of hands-on learning, filled with teamwork, problem-solving and excitement. Year 2 truly brought history to life!
On Thursday 22nd January, the Whitchurch Choir travelled to the O2 Arena in London to take part in the Young Voices concert. Since September, the children have been working incredibly hard to learn all the songs and dance moves, and they were beyond excited to finally perform on such a huge stage.
At the arena, we were seated right at the very top, almost next to the ceiling! It certainly took a little while to get used to the height, but it didn’t dampen the excitement. Throughout the entire day, the children worked tirelessly, behaved beautifully and were an absolute credit to Whitchurch.
The concert itself was truly amazing. The choir joined in with huge enthusiasm, with many of the children singing, dancing and jumping around for hours without a break. The journey home was a long one this year, but it was also a very quiet one, filled with exhausted children fast asleep after an unforgettable experience.
A massive well done to all the children for being so amazing, and a huge thank you to the adults who gave up their time and stayed until late at night to make this wonderful opportunity possible.

We enjoyed a truly wonderful afternoon with our Reading Buddies at Whitchurch Combined School.
The children came to school dressed in their pyjamas and comfy slippers, bringing along their favourite books for a cosy and relaxed reading experience. Throughout the afternoon, our older pupils did a fantastic job of collecting their younger buddies, finding quiet, comfortable spaces around the school, and sharing stories together.
This special event is always a firm favourite. The younger children love spending time with their older buddies, listening to stories and enjoying the calm, caring atmosphere that reading together creates.
Winnie in Year 1 told us:
“I love it because we get to bring in our favourite book, wear my pyjamas and read with Erin and Annabelle who are in Year 6.”
Moments like these truly highlight the caring and supportive spirit of our school community, and we are so proud of all the children who took part.
